BCCI gives 'Clean Chit' to Raina and Jadeja

Respite for Raina, Jadeja as BCCI gives them 'clean chit'

NEW DELHI: The BCCI, on Monday, gave 'clean chits' to cricketers Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja, after they were accused of accepting bribes from a businessman by Lalit Modi. The former IPL commissioner had shared a letter via twitter on Saturday which stated that the CSK duo, along with West Indies allrounder Dwayne Bravo, had tried to hinder the interest of the sport and were in close contact with real estate tycoon Baba Diwal.

Board secretary Anurag Thakur and chief selector Sandeep Patil, who also announced the respective squads for India's tour of Zimbabwe and India A's tri-series against South Africa A and Australia A, said the ICC's anti-corruption unit has received the mail from Modi and they trust it to reveal the truth.

"Lalit Modi had written an e-mail to ICC. The ICC had informed BCCI regarding this e-mail," Thakur answered in response to a question on the issue. "These three are international players, and the ICC has to conduct an enquiry. So far the ICC has not come out with a report. There is no info from the ICC as of now. In a way, this is a clean chit," Thakur said during the press conference.

"When somebody plays international cricket, the ICC is responsible. Only the ICC can answer as per their investigations. It falls under ICC's purview. They have said that they are enquiring, so only they can answer on this. If there was anything, they could have reported back to us," the board secretary further said.

Modi's letter also claimed that he had been informed by his sources that Diwal has paid in cash and kind (flats) to the three players in tune of Rs 20 crore each. "The ICC confirms that Mr. Modi's confidential e-mail, which was received in June 2013, and which has recently been published on Twitter, was provided to the ACSU at that time," the world cricket body had responded. "The ACSU handled that information in accordance with its standard operating procedures, which included sharing it with the BCCI's anti-corruption unit," Thakur said.

In a recently-surfaced report, it was highlighted that a certain player was approached for spot-fixing ahead of the 2015 edition of the IPL. On being asked of his identity, Thakur denied naming the player and said the anti-corruption unit has been intimated of the matter.

"We don't disclose the name of the players. If a player has been approached, we report it to the anti-corruption unit," he said. We have to look at the detailed report. Once the final report comes in, then we will take action. As of now, the inquiry is still not over," Thakur said.

The BCCI secretary also played down the rumors of any sort of rift within the Indian team following their 2-1 ODI series loss to Bangladesh last week. Following a sequence of comments made by India vice-captain Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina, many sections of the media claimed affirmed that Kohli and Dhoni were at loggerheads. However, Patil not only denied any such speculation, but specifically mentioned that "all is well within the Indian team".

"A lot of things get said in the public, but that doesn't mean it is true," Thakur added.
